The drive to establish a Ronald McDonald House in Southern Colorado originated when Dr. John Genrich recognized the need for a 'home away from home' where families of seriously ill children could find accommodations in Colorado Springs. In the early 1980's, he began rallying the support from local McDonald’s restaurants, the Junior League, Memorial Hospital and other community organizations. As a former TB sanatorium, and later, a residence for nursing students, the house on Logan Avenue has always been a refuge for those in need and those seeking to help them - it is truly the perfect location. The house opened on Valentine's Day, 1987, and appropriate beginning for what is often called 'the house that love built'.

Since opening, the house has gone thru a couple reconstructions (in 1999, 2007 and again in 2008) which have provided all guests with more common areas to relax, rejuvenate and spend quality time.

Going forward, the Ronald McDonald House became a part of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC)...a crucial addition to our overall goal of supporting families with seriously ill children, providing services to address the unique needs of our community and to develop strong relationships with the medical community.

The first Ronald McDonald Family Room in Colorado was opened in Memorial's Hospital for Children in January, 2007. The Family Room is located directly across the hall from the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and serves as a respite for families with seriously ill children.

Realizing the need for additional health care in the Southern Colorado area, the areas first Ronald McDonald Care Mobile was introduced in March of 2009. RMHC has partnered with Peak Vista Health Systems to offer medical and dental services free of charge to children who might not otherwise have access to healthcare.

A wonderful 'Healing Garden' was completed in April, 2009. Inspired after a tragic loss of their 33 week gestation son, Sterling, Treasure and Aaron Davis have built an environment for families to reflect, find strength and inspiration, and hope.

A second Ronald McDonald Family Room, located inside St Francis Medical Center, was opened in mid-October of 2009 and like our first Family Room, serves families with hospitalized children.
