Volunteering at The Ronald McDonald House

The Volunteer Program plays an integral role in the overall operation of the Ronald McDonald House of Southern Colorado. Essentially, without our dedicated volunteers the House would not run as efficiently as it presently does on a day-to-day basis. We depend on our volunteers to complete a myriad of projects/chores around the House. For instance, volunteers clean, cook and bake and try to keep the home-away-from-home feel for our families staying at the House.

The House offers three volunteer shifts per day, seven days a week. One person normally fills each shift, however we really encourage families to volunteer together.

Morning Shift
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Afternoon Shift
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Evening Shift
5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

There is a "To Do" list with items highlighted for volunteers to choose from as they begin each shift. Some of the things on the list are: vacuum the family room, straighten the toy room, sweep the kitchen floor, bake cookies or cake or brownies, file cards, address envelopes, fill candy dishes, unload the dishwashers, sweep the outside walks, etc. The list varies from day to day and from shift to shift. Volunteers can also chat with willing family members, who are guests at the House. Additionally, volunteers can train to help out in the office.

Group projects (of no more than 10 people at a time, because the House is small) become available from time to time. The most common activities are addressing, folding, stuffing, sealing, and stamping bulk mails; decorating the House for Christmas; cooking a dinner meal for our families (either cook and serve at the House or cook at home and bring in to serve); baking large batches of cookies or brownies; deep cleaning a room or two; staining the deck and outdoor furniture; etc.

Aside from the “To Do” items and other projects mentioned above, there are a number of other activities available for volunteers. The House has a number of fundraising events throughout each year, which are extremely important, beneficial and fun. If you enjoy assisting to put together various types of fun events, then this volunteer opportunity through the House might be the perfect fit for you.

If you're looking for a fulfilling opportunity to positively impact others, attend one of our Volunteer Orientations. They are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. and the third Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Check out the possibilities for an exciting chance to make a difference at the House. (Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.)

Please call Susan, the Volunteer Coordinator at 719-471-1814 or e-mail the House for more information or to register for one of the Volunteer Orientation Sessions.
